If you follow me on social media you know that I’ve been on a cleanout binge lately. It was looking a little dicey at first but don’t worry. I survived the Great Office Cleanup of 2019 and made it out alive.
Spring cleaning is always on my mind this time of year, and the office isn’t the only room that’s undergone a purge. I’ve done a major clean-out on my closet too. Good thing because I’d almost forgotten what color the carpet was in there. (I’m kidding. Mostly.)
Cleaning out is one of my small joys. I think there’s a part of all of us that enjoy it. I’ve written about decluttering your life and your closet before and how much I’ve like Marie Kondo and her KonMarie method! She’s so positive in the face of the biggest messes in the world that she reminds me of a more chipper version Mary Poppins, cleaning up and getting rid of “stuff” without a getting all wrapped up in emotions. (If you haven’t watched her show, go ahead and tune in on Netflix.)
Sssh, don’t tell Marie Kondo, but this Marie thinks one of the best part about cleaning out is making room for new stuff, better stuff, more fashionable stuff.
To be clear: having undergone a major downsizing before moving into our lovely but much smaller home two years ago, I am a big fan reducing clutter and keeping only what you love. But sometimes, the best motivation for cleaning out four old dresses is to make room for one new dress that makes your heart go pitter pat.
With my closet looking far more spacious and the weather is getting warmer, I’m in hot pursuit of a few fun new pieces to add to my upcoming summer wardrobe.

The Changing Of The Seasons
It’s time to put away those chunky sweaters. Sure, you left them in your closet for now because you knew there were still a couple of nippy mornings. But for most of us, that’s over. Put away the snow boots and the winter parkas.
Pull out the white jeans, the flowey caftans, and the straw purses!
Now that you’ve moved your favorite summer outfits to the front of the closet, it’s time to refresh your wardrobe with a few new pieces that are festive and fiercely fashionable!
Here are six ideas for simple and summery additions to your closet.
Summer = Floral Dresses
It’s the beachey, picnicy, summer version of the little black dress. You almost can’t do summer without a handful of bright, floral dresses. Here are a couple that caught my eye this year:
Flouncy Tunics
Tunics don’t seem to be going out of style at all, and for that can we all say a collective, “Amen” to the magical people in power who decide what clothes we see in stores.
Tunics are the best thing since, well, since tunics were in fashion last. They hide all the things you don’t like, they cover all the areas that aren’t your favorite. They let the breeze in so you don’t pass out from that summer heat. And after all of these good deeds of theirs, they still make you look great!
Can we start a petition to keep these around forever? Until that happens, I’m just stocking up on these:
You Don’t Have To Jump In A Jumpsuit
I confess, I don’t own a jumpsuit. I don’t think I’ve even tried one on before.
They intimidate me.
I see the women in them who look fantastic, but in my head it’s not going to look that way on me. They seem like fashion for the 20-year crowd, not the 50-year crowd.
But this year, I came across some that seem more approachable. And they are all at Banana Republic. I’ve now got a mental note that next time I’m at the mall I’ll be popping into a Banana Republic store and trying these on myself, but until then I’ll share with you and you can decide for yourself:
From Your Ears…
One of the quickest ways to spruce up an old outfit, or make something feel fresh and fun again is to throw on some new jewelry.
A few years ago, it was long, opera length necklaces. Those seem to have made their way out and the new trend du jour is earrings.
Some are bling-y, many have fringe, some have beading. All have bright colors and might be bigger than you’re used to wearing. Don’t stress – try them on and have some fun! These are sure to bring a smile to your face when you check yourself in the mirror on your way out the door:
…All The Way To Your Toes
Sandals. You can’t get through summer without them.
I don’t know about you, but when I’m on the search for sandals I want beach walking comfort combined with style. I know, I know, I really do want it all in life!
Sometimes it’s a struggle, but this year I’ve seen this combination everywhere! With a range of styles at a range of prices, it’ll be easy to find a pair that are perfect for you:
To Top It All Off
Whether fierce and under fifty, or fierce and beyond fifty (or even way beyond) the reality is that none of us are as young as we used to be.
Another reality is, it’s never too early (or to late!) to take care of your skin. I’ve preached the value of sunscreen before (here’s a link to my personal favorite) but I do love a good straw hat in the summertime. It’s sun protection that is adorable. And as an added bonus, a fashionable and summery hat is amazing camouflage on a bad hair day.
At this point, my closet is well stocked with darling summer hats, but if you’re looking for something new let me suggest these classic styles:
